Hieroglyphics

Description

During the late 1990s, my work took me to the Middle East, especially Egypt and Jordan. I was drawn to the hieroglyphics that I saw on many of the monuments, tombs and ruins. This type of writing has a whimsical, decorative quality that I sought to capture in the images. In order to highlight the figures in the hieroglyphics, I hand painted the black and white photographs and used strong colors in the background to make the figures stand out. The result had a rhythmic feel almost like a  musical score.
