C’est L’ Afrique
Dates: 1989-1997
Description
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, I traveled to West Africa on multiple occasions. The countries in West Africa, such as Nigeria, Mali and Niger were quite primitive, especially when you left the cities. The rural cultures had remained intact for centuries, and I was deeply moved by their primitive beauty. I took many rolls of black and white film and hand painted all of the final prints. Some of the images were reworked in the darkroom by sandwiching two negatives together to create a double exposure. The final product seeks to capture the primitive but complex beauty of rural West Africa.
